The city of Costa Mesa was established in 1953 and began as a farming community. Since then it has grown into primarily retail and service oriented businesses. South Coast Plaza is the largest center of commercial activity in Costa Mesa. With 322 stores, South Coast Plaza generates more than one billions dollars per year in sales making it one of the highest volume regional shopping centers in the nation. Costa Mesa is also home to manufacturers of plastics, pharmaceuticals and electronic firms.
The commercial district surrounding South Coast Plaza, which contains parts of northern Costa Mesa and southern Santa Ana, is sometimes called South Coast Metro.
Costa Mesa has 26 parks, golf course, 26 public schools and 2 libraries.
